I have so many fond memories of John. As volunteers, we spent countless hours setting up for fundraisers, selling frozen yogurt, answering phones as the overnight telethon crew, hosting dance-a-thons, costume parties, and more. If something needed to be built or fixed, John could do it- and did so happily. I loved watching him with Amanda and I will always cherish the summer he spent teaching her to use the pow-pow (hammer) to build a concessions trailer. He spent so many days (morning to night) planning and building that trailer —always with a smile.
My sincere condolences to the Horvatin family.

I have many fun memories with Uncle John and the family from our adventures growing up. We used to go to the Ryan’s cottage in South Haven during the summer, and Uncle John would put his boat out on Lake Michigan. He would anchor the boat on the sandbar and we would jump off of it, and swim back and forth to the shore. One time we were tubing, and the water became choppy. We were idling, and Amanda and I were sitting in the front of the boat when the bow of the boat practically capsized under a massive wave. It was hilarious, and we were all screaming, laughing and absolutely soaked.
Another memory is going to the club and staying overnight in the camper. We would swim at the beach during the day, have picnics with the whole family, and then I got to stay with Uncle John and Amanda in the camper a couple of times. We thought it was so fun to stay in the bunk beds and be in the outdoors like that.
When I think about it, Uncle John had all of the outdoorsy interests and “toys” like the boat and camper, that i have or want to have in the future. I think my interests sparked when I was young by getting to do these things with him and my dad.
