Obituary of Gary L. Hinthorn

Age 73 of Joliet, Illinois, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 3, 2024.

Gary was born on July 27, 1950 in Normal, IL to Dale and Mary (Powell) Hinthorn.  He was a graduate of Gibson City High School with the class of 1968, and every summer he would attend the alumni gathering in Gibson City, meeting up with former members of his class.  Gary went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in 1974. He worked 37 years for Altria Group, INC. in sales, before retiring in 2012. After enjoying his retirement for 3 years, he took a part time job working as a merchandise representative calling on local stores.  He also served in the National Guard as a medic.

Every morning Gary would begin his day by joining his friends at the local McDonalds for coffee.  He was an avid White Sox fan and also liked to watch the Chicago Bears and Bulls.  Gary had a great sense of humor and always had a story to tell.  He loved spending time with his family. He was always very involved in his children’s lives, coaching their soccer, softball, and basketball teams. His grandchildren also brought him great joy, and he rarely missed attending their activities.

Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Marlene (Jahnke) Hinthorn; his dear children, Jeffrey (Christina) Hinthorn, Tracy Hinthorn, Kelly (Luke) Whitecotton, and Kevin (Heather) Hinthorn; his cherished grandchildren, Christopher and Joshua Hinthorn, Tyler Hinthorn, Brennen and Carter Minski, Addison Hinthorn-McVey, Lilly and Leo Whitecotton, and Elizabeth Hinthorn; his mother, Mary Hinthorn; brothers, Robert (Marsha) Hinthorn, and Greg Hinthorn; sisters and brothers-in-law, Robert Munday, Elaine and Mike Bessette, and Laura and Casey Wickstrom.  He leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Gary is preceded in death by his father, Dale Hinthorn; brother, James Hinthorn; his in-laws, Art and Irene Jahnke; and sister-in-law, Nancy Munday.
