Obituary of Bernard Eugene Shreffler

Bernard E. Shreffler, age 77, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at home.

Bernard was born in Joliet on December 5, 1946 to the late Alden and Marion (nee Richards) Shreffler, and was a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School.

Bernard was a dedicated union electrician and a proud member of IBEW Local #176.   He was also a member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond and a member of Joliet APA pool league and the Matteson Masonic Lodge #175.  He was also an avid fan of Midget Auto Racing.

A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was loved by everyone who met him.  He had a great sense of humor and will be remembered for his storytelling and memorable personality.

Bernard is survived by his loving wife Maria “Lupe” (Garza) Shreffler of Joliet, IL; daughter, Christine (Pat) McCabe of Morris, IL; son, Robert “Bob” (the late Laura) Shreffler of Joliet, IL; step-son, Eric (Jennifer) Hernandez of Joliet, IL; grandchildren, Robert, Ashley, Allie, and Patrick McCabe, Kaitlyn and Alden Shreffler, and Maya and Rebecca Hernandez; and great-grandchild, Brockton Watson.  Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A Memorial Gathering for Bernard Shreffler will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd., Joliet.  A Memorial Service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m.  Cremation rites have been accorded and interment will be private.
