Obituary of Ronald Charles Schmick
Ronald Charles Schmick, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the age of 78, at home with family by his side. Ron was born in Saginaw, MI in 1946, to Leo and Leola Schmick. He spent his childhood there until the family moved to Tucson, AZ, in 1958. During his years in Tuscon, he played football for the Amphitheater High School and was the team captain his senior year. After graduating, he joined the Army and was stationed at Fr. Benning, GA. He was honorably discharged upon completion of his services and returned to Tucson. While attending his school’s football game, this time as a fan, he met his future and current wife, Karen. Ron and Karen were wed in 1968 and resided in Tucson until 1976, when Ron accepted a welding position with Chicago Bridge and Iron, and became a member of the Boilermakers Union. He and Karen, along with their children, traveled around the country to be with Ron and his work. He eventually became a safety supervisor for the company and finally retired in 1999. He then became a safety consultant for nuclear plants and oil refineries until 2010. Ron was also a 32nd Degree Mason, having been inducted in 1980. As part of his retirement, Ron and Karen purchased property in Jasper, AR, and Ron completed a dream he had of building his home with his own two hands. He was an avid metalsmith, welder, and woodworker. He loved working on his houses and projects for other people, but most especially for his family. Ron was a devoted husband, just falling short of 57 years of marriage. He was a devoted father and would do anything for his children. He took joy in their accomplishments and took them to task when needed. (Trust me it was needed.)
He is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Christopher (Pam) and their children, Spencer and Addison; daughter, Jennifer Schmick, and her son, Parker Van Camp. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Schmick, and sister, Joanne Evans.
As it was Ron’s request, cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his name would be appreciated. Visit his Memorial Tribute at www.fredcdames.com where you can share a favorite memory or leave a condolence.
