Our fellow friar of the Sacred Heart Province, Fr. Eric Kahn, OFM, died on Friday, February 8, 2013 at Alexian Brothers Lansdowne Village in St. Louis, MO at the age of 83.
Earl Kahn, the son of Earl Kahn and Marie Braun, was invested with the habit of the First Order on July 3, 1948 in Teutopolis, IL. At that time, he received the religious name of Eric. He pronounced solemn vows on July 5, 1952 and was ordained to the priesthood on September 8, 1955.
Over the years, he taught Latin and Greek in a number of schools including St. Francis Academy in Joliet, St. Joseph Minor Seminary in Westmont and Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Quincy. He also filled a number of chaplaincies in the course of his ministry.
Eric always had a strong inclination to contemplation and solitude and lived for a time at the Ritiro at Alverna Retreat House in Indianapolis, the Pinecroft House of Peace in Cincinnati, the House of Prayer in Republic, MO and Cordiafonte at The Hermitage in Indianapolis.
Eric's ready smile and gentle manner touched many hearts in the course of his 57 years of ministry.
Eric is survived by his sister, Pat Tobin of Joliet and his Franciscan Family. He generously donated his body to science at St. Louis University. In lieu of the Mass of Christian Burial, a Memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held on Monday, March 4th, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Joliet.
