Everyone looks forward to springtime, and for bicycle collectors in Missouri and the surrounding states, the month of May means it is time to load up the trailer with bikes and head for the swap meet in Springfield, Missouri. For me, there were two people I wanted to see most: Floyd Smith and our mutual friend, James Allen. Floyd always had a truck loaded with the bikes that most interested me. I still remember the day I looked into the back of his pickup and peered through the window and saw the 1918 Sears "Master." Floyd had restored the bike to perfection, painting it in "French Gray," and adding beautiful white tires. As soon as Floyd took the bike out of the truck, we made a deal. Afterward I sat next to Floyd and Jeanine and Floyd told the story of where and how he found the bike, and how he went about restoring it. This is a language shared only by collectors (my wife, bless her heart, would be bored in thirty seconds or less).
The important thing to know is that when the bicycle story was finished, Floyd and I moved on to other, even more important things, such as friends, and family, and health, and work. It was Floyd who always reminded me that the real fun of attending a swap meet was seeing your friends again. Floyd was so right. I miss him very much. Now, when I find another Mead bicycle, for instance, I tell him about it, even though he isn't sitting next to me at the swap meet. I love you, Floyd. James and I will be talking about you, in person, in Springfield a couple of months or so.

a brilliant light in the lives of all those who did. A trip to the Museum in Galena to see your wonderful bicycles is on our

Back just a few short years ago, when my friend Floyd Smith was traveling about the country looking for bicycles with the help of his beloved son-in-law Dave (who is really a true son in spirit), there was one brand Floyd liked more than any other: Mead bicycles, sold by mail across this country at the turn of the previous century. In fact, Floyd's reputation preceeded him at bicycle swap meets--he became known affectionately as "Mr. Mead" by collectors and dealers across the midwest and beyond. Floyd Smith's enthusiasm for old bicycles was such that I caught the Mead "bug" myself! I remember finding a 1930's Mead Autocycle, made by Schwinn, in Janesville, Wisconsin one night. I called Floyd on the phone, so excited I could hardly speak. Floyd shared my joy. He exclaimed "Find of a lifetime!".....Floyd was as happy for me as if he had found the bike himself. Because the happiness that comes in collecting resides in sharing one's latest, greatest find with one's friends. It was swapping stories and sharing company that mattered to Floyd, and me, and our friend James Allen, and many others.
As Floyd got older he began to part with some of his beloved Mead bicycles. One Mead in particular is his masterpiece: a 1920's Mead "motorbike." Floyd restored this bicycle himself, when he was at the height of his powers. Everything about it is perfect. The paint shows the hand of a true artist. Every part, right down to the last nut and bolt, is one hundred per cent correct. Floyd saw to that. And Floyd knew how much I admired his masterpiece. One day when I was visiting Floyd and his amazing collection of old bicycles, he dropped a hint that this particular bike, his pride and joy, might be for sale. Only a true collector knows what this means, because such a transaction is not about money. Floyd was letting me know that he trusted me to take care of his most prized possession. I am proud to say that this Mead bicycle s now on display in my modest museum in Galena, Illinois.
I wanted Floyd and Dave to visit my museum in the worst way, and about five years ago I got my wish. Although he was in failing health, Floyd made the two and one half hour trip each way from Morris to Galena. My museum is in a little cabin at the foot of a fairly steep hill, and to reach the museum Floyd threw his leg over our garden tractor and rode down the hill to see all the bicycles I had bought from him through the years, and quite a few others. That day stands out in my memory as no other. Because Floyd Smith was and is my hero.
"Hero" is a word used rather loosely these days, I know. Floyd would often say that our mutual friend, James Allen, was his hero (James is a hero to a lot of us!). I look up to Floyd the way he looked up to James. Floyd passed his love for Mead bicycles on to me, but more than this, he showed me, by example, how to treat other people in this wonderful old hobby of ours with love and generosity.
I call this story "Floyd Smith's Courage" because Floyd showed me how to live with one's whole heart, even as one's body begins to fail. So long as Dave was willing to take Floyd to the next swap meet or show, Floyd was ready to go! One of James Allen's favorite words is "Desire." Floyd had the desire, and it never left him!
I will take care of Floyd Smith's masterpiece so long as I am alive. I hope when the time comes I can find someone else who can love the bike as much as I do. There will never be another Mr. Mead, though. Floyd Smith is irreplaceable. Floyd has shown me how to live with dash and verve and courage to the end of my days. And Dave, I am sure you know that Floyd loved you like a son. I have never seen a greater love between a man and his father in law. Floyd Smith will never be gone so long as you live. Thanks for letting me be a part of everything.

In hearing of Floyd's passing, we were reminded of the good times we had when Floyd and Jeaninne lived in Southern Missouri and a group of us would meet at a restaurant in Springfield once a month for breakfast and fellowship with other antique bicycle collectors. And seeing them at the swap meets was always an enjoyable time, and something we always looked forward to. Good memories of good times. May loving memories ease your loss and bring you comfort.

Bicycles brought Floyd and I together, the impulse to collect and preserve something we both thought beautiful....but in a short time, Floyd became a friend of the heart. Floyd's intelligence, warmth, sense of humor, and most of all, his ability to love, will be with me forever. I miss you, Floyd. Thank you for being my friend.
