I had Mr. Lane as a homeroom teacher at Washington Jr. High. I have a friend who had him as a teacher at Romeoville. He made a difference in so many lives. He was my teacher in 1964-65. My father died in 1988 and he came to the wake. I was so surprised he remembered me after so many years. Of course I remembered him but after so many students and years it showed how caring of a person he was. My sympathy to you.

Mr. Lane was my first teacher in high school in 1970 and he was more than just an English teacher. He provided insights on life and the life I could expect growing up. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher to begin my day. I also sat right in front of his desk in the middle of the first row because I couldn't get enough of what he had to say.
I'm sure God has a special place for you, also on the first row.

Conveying my heartfelt condolence to the Lane family and those that love him, as I always will.
Mr. Lane was the most loving, caring, tender, compassionate, loyal and dedicated Teacher at Romeoville High School. Each of his students "felt" his loving concern for them and their education. To many he became a loving Father, Caring Teacher and as time progressed, an unforgotten and beloved friend.
Mr. Lane, to me, is like fermented wine, which becomes more valueable with increasing precious time. As the years progress, his students begin to gradually "realize" the values, depth of the education that he presented and allowed you to chose. As a genuine educator blessed with both the gift and love of teaching does, their true satisfaction is received by "seeing" who his students have "become"; their best selves.
Mere words are unable to sufficiently express how much I love and will endlessly so, Mr. John A. Lane. One man, through his love for humanity and teaching contributed to shaping and molding, one child at a time, an unforgettable graduating class.
Thank you for a job well done, Mr. Lane! Class is dismissed.

Mr. Lane was a remarkable teacher, kind-hearted soul, and a great role model for the young people (including us) who had the fortunate opportunity to have met him. He always maintained a big picture view of events and situations and never seemed to let the daily aggravations rattle him. He could disarm the most unruly student with a calm and simple approach. He was generous in time, spirit, and donations (often the biggest contributor to a student organization event). We've thought about him many times over the years (since 1979), and were happy to see that he continued to live a rich and long life which allowed him to touch the lives of so many others.

I will remember Mr. Lane for the rest of my life. He was my high school teacher at RHS. It was a very difficult time in my life and he made such a difference. He cared for me at a time when I thought nobody else did. I was a very difficult student that tried his patience but he never backed down... he never gave up on me... and he made me see the potential that I couldn't see in myself at the time. His genuine kindness will always mean the world to me and I'm so thankful that I had him in my life when I did.

My sympathies and love to the Lane family. I knew Mr.Lane while he was a substitute teacher at Timber Ridge. He substituted in my classroom many, many times and I always added "Stories from Mr. Lane" on to each day's plans and he would tell wonderful stories to my students. Mr. Lane shared both his wealth of knowledge and his compassion and concern for the students. He was proud to be a veteran, a teacher, and the Grandpa to Sean and Jessica. God used him as a blessing to many during his lifetime. I will pray that the Lane family will be aware of God's comfort in your time of grief and smile as you share sweet memories. Much love "to you good people" as Mr. Lane always said in his cheerfully booming voice.

Mr. Lane sat me down one day and held out a paper I had written poorly. He said that I had a rare gift for expressing exactly what I intended to say, and that I could be a published writer one day if I only applied myself. I'd like to say that Mr. Lane saw that in me alone, but I believe that he truly intended to uplift all of his students. Well, Mr. Lane, I am a published author, and I have thought and credited you many times over the years. I'll make a toast to my passed English teacher this evening. An impressive man, whom I, like too many of the great teachers in my life, took for granted. Rest in prose, my friend...

I am so sorry for the loss of a great man and teacher.
I was just one of hundreds of young people Mr Lane's heart touched over the years. I say his heart because it was not only from his teaching of English that I learned, but his lessons in life and warmth as a person he shared with us.
I was fortunate to have him a a teacher for several classes at Romeoville High School between 1975 and 1978. I believe my writing and poetry was guided by his gifts to teach. In 1978 he helped me by being a teacher sponsor for a Variety show I wished to put on to help raise money for our school's Music and English programs.
We all have many teachers in life. Mr John Lane was one that will never be forgotten.
Rest well Mr. Lane, for you will live on through all the lives and hearts your touched along the way. Thank-you.

I had the pleasure of working with John at Timber Ridge. The way the students respected and listened to John was amazing. He had a way with those children and the entire staff enjoyed having him there. I kept in touch with John after I left Timber Ridge and I enjoyed hearing his stories about his time in the military and other events in his rich life. John loved his family so very much as he talked of them often as well. His faith was such a wonderful example to us all. I remember watching him walk the halls while holding the rosary in his hands. John and I had many great conversations regarding faith and he taught me much about being a follower of Christ. The world is a better place because of people like John, I am blessed having known him.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I was a student of his in 1994 at RHS. He left a lasting impression on my heart. He told a story in class one day that has stuck with me through all these years. We were talking about heaven and eternity and he said: if the earth was made of steel and a bird flew around it one time each year and flapped it's wings just once, by the time the birds yearly flap of its wings had worn the earth worn down to nothing, eternity will just be beginning. He really had the ability to make us think. He also encouraged us to be involved in school activities, I joined the booster club that year and he certainly knew how to engage our school spirit. That was a wonderful year. The funny thing is, I couldn't even tell you what subject we were studying (it's been more than 40 years) but the lessons I learned of being a good and joyous human being have stayed with me my whole life. My hope is that some day I can inspire young people to be better people the way he inspire me.

My name is Mike, and I was a student at Timber Ridge High School where John Lane was a substitute. Former classmates of mine reached out to me to let me know about Mr. Lane's passing. All of us were saddened to hear of his passing, but it was not long before we began sharing stories about the classes we had with him. He made us laugh, he brought us wisdom, and every one of them had at least one story to tell. Mr. Lane was of course passionate about his Irish heritage, something we shared. My last name, Hartge is Gaelic. I'll always remember him as the first - and so far only - person who correctly pronounced it without being told how. My friends and I all had similar stories about his work as a substitute teacher, and the way he, even in small ways, touched all of our lives. In this time of hardship, please know that Mr. Lane's memory lives strong in all of us, and we will all remember the ways he uplifted us, enriched us, and helped us learn and grow as students and people. He was a great man, and he will be deeply missed.

A truly memorable educator who enriched the lives of all of his students year after year. Delivering the English curriculum to all of his 9th grade students was only part of their education. His wisdom, parental concern, character development, recall of history, and steady tidbits of Irish humor peppered every lesson he taught. He seemingly never gave up on any student he had in class. And I know he prayed for each of those students in need. If he believed in a student, a cause, or a problem that needed to be addressed, he was always willing to come to the Principal's Office and let me know what he thought should be done. Now he is kneeling in the presence of his Savior.

Dear Family and Friends of Mr. Lane,
I am sorry to hear of his passing. I wanted to tell you that he made a big difference in my life... even if it was more for kicking me out of his class....
I was in his English class at Romeoville High School in 1992 or so... and I was not happy in his English class. It was obvious that I was bored and not doing well there. He noticed right away that I was not challenged... I was in his class less than a week I think. He pushed me into honors English classes.. And I never looked back. But he stood up for me when I needed it and told me I could do more and do better. And I thank him for that. I now work as a professional librarian in Iowa but I owe him with putting me on the right path to a love of literature and books that got me all the way through college and a masters degree... From our family to yours deepest condolences in your time of loss but know that he really did make a difference in my life! Sincerely, Jay

I did not have Mr. Lane as a teacher for a class. I saw him in the English Hall and Office, where I often spent time. I would see him with other students and on field trips. His passion for teaching, his ability to share his life, wisdom, and stories, and the manner in which he did so still had a great impact on me. He taught me an appreciation for our Pledge I never had before in my life, and he showed that when we were supposed to be playing (like the field-trips to Great America) that we should indeed play.

Paula and I were high school sweethearts. We both were in Mr. Lane's English class as freshman. Although this was about 23 years ago, Mr. Lane made an impression on us. He predicted that both Paula and I would be married one day. I knew he was right at the time but Paula not so much. However, 8 years later we were married. We now have 5 kids ranging from 11 years old to 8 month old; 3 boys and 2 girls.
Mr. Lane impressed us so much with his integrity, morals, and values. Looking back now, especially with a family, we appreciate the example he was for his students.
Paula and I always wanted to invite Mr. Lane to our wedding but didn't know how to contact him at the time.
As I am sure that your family is mourning the loss, the world should be as well. In our eyes, he was an example of the kind if person we need more of in this world. Thank you to the family for sharing him with us through the years. Prayers and blessings to Mr. Lane and to all of you.

My condolences to the family. I had Mr. Lane for English back in 1981 and was also a student helper. He was a wonderful and inspiring man who always tried to help students.
Thank you Mr. Lane for all the wonderful memories RIP.

I had the good fortune to have Mr. Lane as a high school teacher at Lockport West High School in Lockport, Illinois from 1968 through 1971. By far, Mr. Lane was one of the most caring teachers to ever walk the halls of LWHS!!! He was loved by all. A TRUE SPARTAN, R.I.P. Mr. Lane.
