Mrs Frederickson was my teacher. She taught my English classes at Richland, and I cannot thank her enough for the time I spent there. Every day she would put a creative writing prompt on the board, something like “when I walked out of the dark forest, the first thing I saw......” and gave 6th graders total creative license including the macabre machinations of boys who read Stephen King too young. She read “The Giver” out loud to class, in its entirety. Just a half chapter or so a day, but I can still hear her enunciation and the emotion she put into her readings. The ending left us shaken, and I hope she hears the music now, as she told me Jonas did so long ago. She had a copy of “The Hobbit”, I read it (Ken Hutchinson said I should read LOTR, which he borrowed from her library, I did in high school) and I loved that book so much I kept it, which was a cardinal sin in her class. I cherish that copy, with the careful, cursive script of her name opposite the title page, forever reminding me of the secret sin. Something tells me she knew, and let me have it. I’m crying now, wishing for years long gone, so I’ll stop by saying that I love you Mrs Frederickson. So many children didn’t deserve you as a teacher, and so many loved you that were blessed with your kind heart and sharp mind. Goodbye, I hope to see you again if we can.

Mrs. Fredrickson was my teacher at Richland Grade School. I recently re-read The Giver, which she introduced me to in the sixth grade. The whole time I was reading it she was the voice of my inner monologue. In this way, and so many others, she will always live on.

Hello, This wonderful teacher did not teach me but she taught my brother Jose. We were living in the Crest Hill apts that were called Willowbridge...it was the ugly part of town at that time. We were immigrant farm workers my brother and I. No one really knew we worked all summer long and part of autumn to survive. My brother and I were 10 and 12. My little sister Celene was also there but she was in 1st grade. Mrs. Brown was my teacher and also Mr. Buzinski---the best math teacher who once gave us the homework assignment to create math board games! Mr. Pasevento who offered me money for what I thought was real gold that I found in the playground when he knew it was fools gold. Just trying to help. Richland Grade School was a wonderful place and changed our family forever. Celene is a nurse practitioner, I am a teacher in Plainfield, my brother is a local 17 journey man (I think he makes more money than all of us) and we owe it all to the firm foundation we received from wonderful teachers such as Mrs. Fredriksen! They truly cared. Mr. Holderson was the best principal. Mrs. Frederiksen truly cared for my brother. She made sure he stayed behind one year in fourth grade so that she could help him more. My memories of her are of compassion and kindness. She was a wonderful human being and my brother truly cared for her. I remember her talking to me about my brother...I was the translator for my parents and I felt she truly cared. I felt her love. She will be missed!

My heart is so saddened right now! My prayers go out to the Fredricksen family.
Mrs. Fredricksen was the absolute best teacher I ever had. She instilled a love of reading within me that actually led me to becoming an author myself. The love she had for her students was indeed felt by hundreds of children over the years, and we were all the better for it. Her laughter and smile were infectious, and she will truly be missed.

I am very sad to hear of the loss of Mrs. Fredricksen! She was my teacher for 3 years and she was also my older brother's teacher. My brother wasn't liked by many of the teachers but Mrs. Fredricksen gave him the time he needed, she really cared, she understood him and the way he learned. She was amazing and I truly love her! She definitely instilled my love for reading and helped me develope the skills to understand content and much more! Definitely will be missed! But I know that families are forever and that the friends we come to make here we will have and cherish in Heavrn! My sincerest condolences.

I had the privilege of working with Janet for a few years at Richland, and of staying in touch with her after her retirement. Janet was a friend and an inspiration to me as a teacher. In fact, I inherited her classroom after her retirement, but I never removed her name from the plaque outside the door. It was there, right beneath my name, and I often smiled at the thought that she was with me.
As a teacher, Janet was always concerned with what was best for the students -- even those that were the most challenging. Often in a meeting about a student or an issue, Janet would make a statement filled with compassion, and I would silently think, "I wish I'd said that." She was both wise and caring.
After she retired, we met for lunch once in a while. No matter what her problems, she'd always smile and greet me with, "Hey, girl!" and want to hear about my life. However, when the conversation turned to her daughters and granddaughters, her face lit up, and her eyes smiled with pride.
She was loved and admired, and will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to her family.
