James P. Stewart
James P. Stewart, age 64, retired Captain with the Joliet Police Department, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Evergreen Park, he was the son of James A. and Patricia Stewart, and was a graduate of St. Laurence High School and Western Illinois University Class of 1974 with a Degree in Law Enforcement. Jim served with the Joliet Police Department over 34 years, retiring as Captain in April, 2009. He then served as Chief Investigator for Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow and received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement on November 12, 2014.
Jim was a member of St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church, and will be remembered for coaching little league, youth basketball and soccer. He was proud of being a 20 gallon blood donor through Heartland Blood Center.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 42 years, Amy L. (nee Matheson) Stewart; three devoted sons, James M. (Jennifer Prusko) Stewart of Carpentersville, William M. (Stacia) Stewart of Gaithersburg, MD, and Curtis S. (Jennifer Glonke) Stewart of Joliet; three loving grandchildren, Lila, Ellie and Liam Stewart; his mother, Patricia Stewart of Lemont; one sister, Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Holub of Justice; and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Norman) Gustafson, Donna Matheson, Kathryn (James) Wyatt and Susan (Jude) Younker.
He was preceded in death by his father, James A. Stewart and brother-in-law, Pete Matheson.
Family and friends will meet Tuesday, November 14, 2017 directly at St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church, 706 N. Broadway St., Joliet, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Chris Groh officiating. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated.
