To the family of John Holland, I'm very sorry for your loss. I used to work with John in the early 80's at EMD until I left the company in 1985. He was a really nice guy, fun, and one of the hardest workers in the office. May you rest in the Peace of Christ, John, and may your family be comforted in their grief.

As many of you know this week I lost my brother John. I have had many flashbacks of memories and wanted to share a few. The first are of when we lost our mother. The only things I remember are being pulled out of school, taken to the hospital and later that night someone thought it was a good idea to show us our parent’s car and see an engine in the front seat. We survived that and went on. I remember when Ali and Frazier had the great fight. One day John was making me mad I was I believe I was thirteen or fourteen and he was I think sixteen. I do not remember why he made me so mad but it escalated to he dared me to pour milk over his head, yes I did. A fight ensued, John chipped my tooth, I broke his nose and the reality hit us both, what will happen when dad gets home, all I will say is he wasn’t impressed about our decision. I remember when Michelle was born and had to babysit her, yes Michelle I changed your diapers. The next memory is of the times I was lucky enough to have worked with my father and brother at EMD. I was there when EMD was the greatest manufacturer of Locomotives in the world. A fun story and will help understand why John was the way he was. I was working at EMD, one day my boss came up to me and said I heard you were quitting. I said no I was thinking of going to school at night and getting my degree as I worked. Well old Jack had a different plan for me, he had called my boss Wayland and work it out that either I quit or I would be fired the next day before I had union protection. Now you know where John got all his attitude, there was no negotiation. Well I did graduate college and one of my proudest possessions, a chimpanzee holding a human skull on top of Darwin’s book of evolution was my college graduation gift from John, I treasure that to this day. The twins, the girl I was dating we took them to the zoo Sherry adored you both, sorry Virginia we were told you were too young to go. I remember every Wednesday going with John to get the kids to take them out for a good dinner and he would have tickets to the Bulls and he could not get six tickets together he would have two or three of you and I had the others. John loved you all. He would come over even when he was only getting one of you for the night. He did not miss those Wednesdays or Fridays. Sandra came into my life and she shared her memories before but did not mention she wanted John as my best man in our wedding. I will close with this, his greatest attribute was tough love whether you were his daughter, son, brother, sister in-law, close friend, co-worker or vendor. He was brutally honest, fiercely loyal and cared greatly for you all. This might have hurt not because he didn’t care but because he did. Tough love was what he knew and gave us all, never think he did not care or love you, and he did. I will miss him greatly as will everyone who were lucky enough be part of his circle of family and friends.

John and I worked together for many years in EMD’s Purchasing Department. John was a tough negotiator and worked tirelessly to make EMD profitable. He always tried to do the “right thing” and held us all accountable for our actions. His work ethic was someone to aspire to. Hard to believe he’s gone as we just spoke a week ago or so. If God needed a buyer, he picked up a good one!

Dad,
You were to young to go
Yet to old to stay
This hurts down deep in my soul
But it had to end this way
I'll miss you till my dying breath
I've always loved you more than you know
Even tho nether of us knew how to show
You're in a better place now
You can fish everyday
Your mother is by your side
Guiding you and showing you the way
Tell grandpa i said hi
And that i miss him too
One day we'll all be together
But hopefully not too soon!!!
I Love you Dad!!!
Your favorite eldest daughter

It's difficult for me to believe that John passed away. I just spoke with him on Friday and we usually spoke once a week or so. He wasn't feeling well but we joked about things that went on at EMD and of the people that we remember.
I'm saddened that I won't be able to pick up the phone and speak with him. Another one passed!
