Grandmaster, I wish I would have kept in touch after I left Joliet and moved to Pittsburgh. I was just reminiscing on studying Tae Kwan Do and when we went to that tournament in Indiana and I placed second for sparring and third for kata. I’ll never forget the memories of training with you and your wife at the Peter Claver Center. Being part of the Vikings at Sho Go Tae Academy was a blessing and I didn’t realize how big of an impact you had on my life at that time. From winning my first trophies to participating in my first demonstration at Lewis University and striking through my first piece of wood, those are special moments I’ll cherish forever. You, your wife Peggy, and the rest of the staff always showed me genuine love, that same love that Jesus Christ would want you to show and give and for that I’m thankful. Growing up without a father in the city of Joliet was rough. You taught me much more than how to defend myself against bullies but a level of commitment, dedication, discipline, hardwork, obedience and perseverance that would carry with me for the rest of my life. I’ll never forget your wild hair! To me, you were a super star! You still are! Thank you for believing in me! May the Lord be with your family and we be reunited again in Glory. With love in Jesus Christ,
Falaksher Najam

The impact that Sensei Ozzie Mitchell made in Joliet, Illinois should never be underestimated. His kind and gentle heart touched hundreds if not thousands of people in the 60 years with his involvement at the Peter Claver Center. He and his wife, Peggy gave an entire life to their core belief of helping people help themselves through self respect, respect to others and community in the field of martial arts at this great organization. As community needs increased, this visionary couple expanded services setting the example of making a difference. An amazing dual that has our highest esteem and respect as leaders of the community. Our greatest condolences to the entire Mitchell family for the loss of a great man, Grandmaster Sensei Ozzie Mitchell. You will be missed. May your legacy live on. God bless the family.

I have so many wonderful memories of Sensei Ozzie. My husband Roger (deceased 2015) & Ozzie worked together at Caterpillar & after work Roger took karate classes. Ozzie always had a smile and always helping everyone. When I worked at Joliet Central High School with at risk students, Ozzie was so much help as I worked to get students off the street.
Peggy & all the family, you are in my thoughts & prayers. I am in Florida & cannot attend but I want you to know I will be thinking of you all.

I began training under Mr. Mitchell over 30 years ago. He was an amazing athlete. A motivating & gifted Sensei. He commanded respect, and treated others with the same respect. Honored by so many. Every time he spoke we all understood, this was the voice of integrity. His words were always about how to help someone else. This was a man who set the standard for those of us around him to strive for. My Sensei, My Friend, Rest in Peace .

I first met Sensei Michell 30 years ago when my son enrolled in karate at the Peter Claver Center. Shortly afterward, my wife also started taking karate lessons there as well. From the very first meeting, I knew there was something genuine and special about the Mitchell's. I watched over the years as he took a personal interest in making my son not only a Master karate student but the outstanding young man he is today. My son is one of the many youth from the east side of Joliet that Sensei Mitchell helped guide into productive men by caring, sharing, and teaching his knowledge. His dedication to rebuilding the southeast side of Joliet will forever add to his eternal legacy which will live on. Re-naming South Chicago Street to Sensei Ozzie Mitchell Drive will only enhance and keep his legacy alive.

GM Ozzie was an inspiration to the martial arts community and to the community in general. Though not a direct student of his, my brother and I were always welcomed with open arms as friends in the arts. We would visit the Mitchell's periodically at PCC or attend the April tournanment just to catch up. It was always a pleasure. I want to wish comfort and peace to the Mitchell family during this difficult time. May you be blessed by love and the greatness of his legacy.

G.M. Ozzie Mitchell treated me like I was his daughter. I have so much respect for him. He would always sit me down and give me positive words of encouragement. One of my best memories was during at tournament, G.M. Mitchell said " if they are still standing, you didn't hit correctly. Tummy Check! "Peace and Blessing G.M. Mitchell

A wonderful mentor to my whole family who I still remember finally after all these years. Grand Master Mitchell taught so many about not just karate, but giving to others who have less; helping those who need it no matter who they are; living your best life; and, of course, not to practice until after you finish your homework and chores. I can only hope he knew how many were touched by having him in our lives, even those who were not students of the martial arts.
