Like others I enjoyed learning more about John through the comments of others and video posted. While many talked of how nice he was - and I definitely agree with that - I wanted to share the first time I got to know of John at Argonne. I had been working at Argonne for a few years and we had passed each other in the hallway but that was about it. On this day I heard someone talking quite loudly at a co-worker, enough to penetrate a few walls. I listened more closely and was increasingly impressed with the tirade - as the speaker clearly had his facts down and was being firm with the (sorry, rather hapless) APS user who hadn't followed safety protocols as instructed. Well curiosity got the best of me and I went out to the main corridor to put a face to a voice. It was of course John, and I made a mental note that this wasn't a person afraid to hold people accountable!
Later I was 'asked' to serve on the radioactive sample safety review committee which included John. He was central to these meetings and loved to banter. I also found him to be one of the most meticulous people around (and there are many of this ilk at Argonne!), and would always come prepared to meetings with copious notes. You weren't going to get away with releasing any Tritium into the APS on his watch. In anticipation of users soon again asking to do more such measurements, we will miss John both personally and professionally at Argonne. We can take some solace in still having with us the lessons he has taught us.

I was deeply saddened to hear of John's passing. He was a close friend from high school days who I truly enjoyed spending time with. I'll always remember having good conversations with him about a variety of topics, and also riding around town in his prized Mustang. I also know how much he loved his family, and I offer my sincere condolences to Elizabeth and his kids and grandchildren.

John was always available to help no matter how busy he was. He was there with advice, a smile, and wisdom.
John loved working at Argonne and took pride in his work. His legacy there will be the people that he trained over the years, a job that he took very seriously. If John trained them, then they were trained right (and often stolen by other divisions).
John always lit up when he talked about his family and spending time with the bears, Anna and Ellie.
My deepest sympathy to his family, John was a wonderful man and a great friend.
John will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. John is walking pain free with Elsa now.

John was certainly one of the most dedicated and passionate persons at ANL. Everyone knew that John cared about keeping us safe; both in performing his duties with radiation surveys all around the APS ring and in safety meetings making sure we didn't miss any important points.
His presence will be greatly missed at the lab, both as a co-worker and a friend.
To his family, we all say Thank You for sharing him with us all these years.

I will miss John's smile at work. We hared many conversations over the 20+ years I've known him. Our topics covered our shared experiences of life; physics, cars, skiing, neurology, motorcycles, German Shepherds, and pain. He introduced me to his loves- his beautiful wife, and his dogs. He also introduced me to his neurologist at UC, who would later perform my surgeries as well. I'll take a nice, long Springtime motorcycle ride in your memory buddy!

On behalf of the whole sector 12 group our sincere condolences to John’s family and friends. He was always available for questions and help requests. It was a delight working with him. He was there when radiation safety related issues needed to be addressed and he had the right solutions. He was always available for questions and help requests and was highly knowledgeable in his discipline when we needed him to solve radiation containment issues with our experiments. He will be missed very much. RIP.

He was a living encylopedia of the history of APS from the early days, and always enjoyed telling stories if you asked. Everyone knew him and everyone counted on him. John was part of my work at APS for as long as I can remember. His expertise, diligence, and integrity were always appreciated and will be greatly missed. John was like the neighborhood police officer: cheerful and friendly, but exacting and serious when it came to radiation safety. My sincerest condolences to John's family and friends. As with so many others here, I'll remember him for his tireless dedication to his work, but also how much his family (and, indeed, his beloved dogs) meant to him. I don't know that anyone has made me feel more valued for my contributions to the lab than he did, and his encouragement to stretch my capabilities and explore different opportunities at the APS is something I'll never forget. Unfortunately, I also have him to thank for all the times the Banana Splits theme song is stuck in my head, but it's a price well worth paying for having known him. Rest well, sir. You are greatly missed.

Sad to hear the news. I worked and interacted with John for many years. Simply said, someone who just cared about what he did and always gave his best. Loved speaking with John on a range of topics and hear about his love for dogs. I recall him telling me a story that he enjoyed a lot, a while back when former President Obama visited ANL and as part of the preparation the secret service stopped by APS and John was excited as he got to pet the service dogs. John will be missed for sure. On behalf of all the APS high pressure research HPCAT facility staff and users, we are grateful for all the help John provided over the years and our deepest condolences to John's family.

My sincere condolences to John's family and friends. I worked with John for many years dealing with safety for all types of radiation, from sealed sources to laboratory x-ray sources to x-rays from APS. He was always friendly, meticulous, and focused on safely getting work done. If things went wrong or weren't done properly by others, he would stay calm and make sure things came out alright in the end. He was very busy but willing to talk about happenings at Argonne and cars, and he would notice if an exotic car was in our parking lot and want to hear about it. I know I will think of John and miss him when I am working on health physics activities in the future. May he rest in peace.

I spent many days with Lauren, at her parent’s house. I was lucky enough to get to know her dad, John. John Vacca was always smiling and cracking jokes. He liked to cook out on his grill, which I was lucky enough to enjoy. I think the thing he loved the most, other than his family, was his dogs. He spoiled those dogs. It felt really good when he trusted me to dog-sit his pups. I will forever be heartbroken over his passing. I am proud to say I knew John Vacca.

My condolences to John’s family. He was an important part of life at the Argonne, and will be sorely missed.
I had the considerable good fortune to work with John for almost thirty years. We first worked together on the development of the APS shielding guidelines and the initial commissioning of the APS beamlines in the early 1990s. After many years of working together intermittently on various projects, we had started working together frequently in the last few years for the APS-U Project. John brought a lot of experience and professionalism to his work, and always brought a positive and constructive approach to even the thorniest of issues.
On a personal level, I would often run into John on the APS Experimental Hall floor and have had many, many pleasant conversations with him on a wide range of topics. In one of these conversations, John found out that one my son’s best friends in college was from Morris. Of course, John knew the kid and his entire family and had nothing but nice things to say about them.
I will miss John, both professionally and personally. May he rest in peace.

I have lost a dear friend and brother in John. We have been good friends since the summer of 1964 when I moved a couple houses down from him. Needless to say the neighborhood was never the same after that as he and I were constantly causing hate and discontent. That never changed over the past 56 years. We would stir up more than you can imagine whenever we got together. I will miss that dearly!!
It was an honor to have known such a good person and I will truly miss him. We all can now realize that we were blessed to have been able to share quality time and moments in Johns life. Now all we have to hold onto are those happy memories that we’ve shared with John and this is what keeps him alive in our hearts and in our minds.
Johns legacy remains and shall continue throughout generations to come as he will continue to live on, through us.

John and I worked together for many years at Argonne. He was always so dedicated to his work and often went over and beyond our expectations to assure that APS experiments were run safely. I know John is very proud of his family and my prayers go out to them. Rest in peace, buddy.

To johns family my condolences, it is heartbreaking to hear this news. John called last week to check how I was doing during the pandemic. We exchange phone calls quite often to talk about work, me here in California and how in Chicago. John was an extremely dedicated individual to his work, but he was always there for his friend. I feel very privilege to have known John for so many years and have had an opportunity to work with him at ANL.
He will be greatly missed.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the entire family. I grew up down the street from him but has been years since I have seen him. May the memories in your heart sustain you through the rough days ahead.

My condolences to the family.
I have been John's friend for too many years to remember. We worked together to make one of his first cars a memory.
Camaro, I think a 1972.
A true friend indeed with many memories.
John's perspective on life will truly be missed.

John's presence is so important and so strong, that I feel very close to him even though I never actually met him. He was able to impart knowledge, confidence, understanding and of course humor through our phone calls and virtual meetings. I know what a loss this is to both of his families, i.e. his immediate family and his Argonne family. It is not an exaggeration to say that the world will feel this loss - his effects are that far reaching. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I worked with John for many years on different projects. He was funny, kind, respectful, and smart. I always looked forward to working with him. Outside of the job, I enjoyed conversations about our families, ski trips, and dogs. I am so sorry for your loss but am certain this world was better for having had John in it.

My deepest sympathies on your loss. I had the pleasure of working with John at Argonne National Laboratory for 20 yrs. We shared a passion for cars and motorcycles and I looked forward to our conversations whenever we met. He will be missed by all who knew him.
