Growing up on the East side of Joliet and attending St Mary Magdalene, we competed fiercely with Mike and his St Jude team through CYO and many local basketball tournaments. Mike was a hard nosed competitor but always a gentleman.
My sincere sympathy at your loss but I join you in celebrating the life of a good man.

My memories of Mike go back to the early 60’s when the Condon and Benigni families would rent cabins next to each other at Silver Lake, Wisconsin. Being that our dad’s where big athletes, sandlot baseball games were always part of the fun. It was easy to see that soft-spoken Mike had some athletic skills even at our young age. My next memory is when I went to Joliet Catholic as a senior and played football with Mike. I still have a visual of one of our first games of the 1972 season when Mike returned an early-game punt for a touchdown. Mike came back to a sideline of cheering teammates with an expression on his face that was an example of Mike’s humility. He was wide-eyed with a half-turned smile as if he didn’t know what to do with the rowdy praise. My deepest condolences to the extended Condon family and to all those who knew Mike well. Mike fought the great fight against the wicked “C”. It was too early for us to lose him.

From the first time I met Mike in 1970 on the baseball field at Lewis University, I knew that he was a special guy. Prior to meeting him personally, I was in the stands at the Joliet Memorial Stadium watching him dominate as a tailback in Coach Gillespie's high powered high school offense. He was clearly a gifted athlete but more importantly, his kindness and goodness were obvious to all. His sense of humor and genuine concern for others was contagious. Sympathies to his family, his many friends, and the Joliet Catholic family.
