For whatever reason I wrote the message below last October -- but didn't know where to send it. I am sorry that Coach Mackey didn't get a chance to read it -- but I thought I would send it along now to his family
Coach Mackey:
I understand that it is unlikely that you remember me but, nevertheless, I wanted to thank you. I was a sophomore at Montini who wrestled in the varsity practice room.
As we all get older and recall events and people that made a difference in our lives -- I decided I was going to thank those who I admired and influenced my life. Your sense of humor and ability to motivate us to fight through adversity, your patience to teach/coach a sophomore were all memorable and inspirational for me.
I also recall your friendship with Coach Ward which was a source of amusement and an example of respect and friendly competition. (Wish I would have sent him a message before he passed.)
In any event, I wanted to know you are remembered. You can click my bio below and, to the extent there are notable contributions, you should take some credit. I have also had lots of losses in life – obviously not listed in the bio. And to the extent I powered through them with one shoulder to the mat – you also get some credit.
