George McGee Jr.
George McGee Jr., a longtime Joliet, IL area resident, passed from this life at the age of 80, on Wednesday May 31, 2023, at his residence in Shorewood, IL. He was born August 10, 1942 in Leland, MS to the late Mattie (nee White) and George McGee. He was raised in Mississippi until relocating to Joliet where he lived most of his adult life and was a well known Master Chef who spent many years running the kitchen at the former Earl’s Café. His jovial, larger than life presence endeared him to the regulars at Earl’s and numerous area residents. George battled health issues gracefully and never one time complained or let life get him down. Through it all, he was positive, upbeat, cheerful and the coolest guy to be around. He was a true soldier and loved by the town.
George is survived by his children, Kendall (Jewel), Robyn (Joan), Clifton, Katrina, Vinita (Vince), Omar (Michelle), Tia (his baby girl), and April (Lorenzo); 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; special grandson Javonte Craig whom he raised as his own, special niece, Ann McBride; special nephew Samuel McGuaghy Jr and his dear friend Clara Miller, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. George also leaves a host of friends that loved him dearly from the Shorewood Horizon Community.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; two sons, Ernest and Larri; his parents Mattie White & George McGee; grandchildren Amaree, Anthony, Riasia, Jadaiya & Khadari; two sisters, Marie McBride and Hattie McGee-Burks; and one brother, James McGee.
A visitation for George McGee Jr. will be held on Monday, June 5, 2023, at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.), Joliet, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Elmhurst Cemetery in Joliet.
