Daryl was a co-worker and family friend of mine at Michaels Pizza in Joliet. We are all devastated from the loss of our beloved friend Daryl. He will forever be missed and will never be forgotten. I am happy to say I had the opportunity to have Daryl in my life and receive some of his amazing art work. I would like to light this candle in memory of one of my favorite people to work with and an amazing employee who is dearly missed.

I sincerely hope each and every one of us has at least one; some of us are lucky to have a few. It’s those persons that come into your life at seemingly just the right time and allow you to lose yourself in the moments you have with that person so that it seems like nothing else matters in the world, but for the time you share together. It’s those people that give you a perspective on life that you could never have had without them and allows life, for that brief time, which seemed like forever all at the same time, seem that much sweeter. My years of high school will always include memories of my time spent with, at the time, my best friend - Daryl Deland.
I can try and describe the Daryl that most people remember so that everyone can sit and nod their heads while they read this and say, “That’s Daryl, I remember him too, exactly as you have said – what an amazing guy.” But, to me, that is the beauty of a best friend: they most assuredly are friends to others, but to you, they are something more. They are more than an acquaintance you get along with and appreciate for who they are without getting an opportunity to truly know them more in depth during the small time you share together in the fleeting moments of life. They may not even realize they were something more to you and you may not realize the same until they are no longer in your life. Life is a tragedy in that regard.
My friendship with Daryl coincided with one of the more difficult times of my life – the divorce of my parents, or, as I recall it now through the filter of the experiences of my life, the end of traditional family life for me. How I got through it? I lost myself in my friendship with Daryl. My best friend and I spent endless days and nights together doing nothing but being friends (it seemed monumental at the time, of course). During those times together of doing nothing, which were the greatest times of doing nothing that I wish my “adult life” would allow me to revisit every day, I learned so much. Endless as it seemed, it was only a moment.
I can’t say I regret many things in life, but one of the things I feel I may was not being able to be the best friend to one of my friends when he may have needed it most. Why this perspective always comes hindsight will always escape me.
I wish I could say I kept in touch with Daryl and we were still the best of friends, but like with so many other people and relationships in life, it wasn’t meant to be. I wish that I could share with him all of things I’ve learned along the road of life since our paths diverged, but more than anything, I simply wish that the opportunity to do so still existed because I want nothing more than to sit and do nothing with my best friend once again.
Daryl will always be remembered as one of the friends in my life that mattered most when it mattered most to have such a friend. Thank you for your friendship, Daryl. RIP. My condolences to Daryl's family. Please know that Daryl had a profound impact on the lives of many.

My heart goes out to Daryl's family and friends. He was a wonderful guy that truly loved life. He was a talented artist, a true gift to this world. Such a heart of gold. He worked with my ex husband Eric at Michael's Pizza in Joliet for many years. He was a great worker and always greeted everyone with a smile. When I stopped by for my kids to visit their Dad at work, Daryl always took them over to 7-11 for slurpees. We will all truly miss Daryl's smile and friendliness. Rest in Paradise Daryl. Until we meet again.....

How do you say goodbye to someone who never did anything other than make you smile. I guess that you don't because they are a part of you and/or your life forever. He blessed so many people's lives including mine. I cannot recall any day spent with him when he didn't smile and make me smile. He was and always will be an inspiration to me because, he set an example in ways that others find too hard or unnecessary. Because of him I know that Goals of having loving impact on the world are possible in more ways then we could ever know. Rest Peacefully Daryl, I know I will see you again one day. My condolences to the DeLand family and friends. I will be praying for you all.

Daryl made our lives better. Everything he ever did or said always came from a place of love. He always put everyone else first, regardless of what he was feeling or needing. He was always the first to make anyone laugh. He was a devoted son, brother and friend to so many. He saw life through the eyes of a true artist- always finding the beauty in things- even when other people couldn't. Because of this, he made me and my daughter better people. Jules will never forget her "Unka Daryl". I will never forget you. Mitch- our hearts are with you. Much love, peace and healing to you, your family and everyone who loved Daryl.

Dear Mitch,
so many wonderful memories - especially the fishing trip. Your Mom and Dad and Daryl and you have always been so special to me. I remember Daryl's graduation and he got his car. All the holidays we spent together. The trip to Texas and Daryl wanting to ride in the Mercedes.
We love you and are so sad about Daryl's passing. He was such a sweet kid. You are in our hearts and prayers.
